Every skein is dyed by hand in small batches, so no two are exactly alike and dye lots differ from each other. That variation is the point, but it means a little planning helps.

For anything larger than a hat, buy all your yarn at once so it comes from the same lot. Then alternate skeins every couple of rows as you work. Any difference blends into the fabric instead of forming a visible line where you switched.

Screens vary too. We photograph in natural light and show several skeins together so you can see the range a colorway covers, but no monitor is perfectly accurate.

If you need more than one skein and the shop is out, get in touch. We can usually dye to order.

Washing

• Machine wash cold on a gentle or wool cycle, or hand wash in cool water
• Use a mild, pH-neutral wool wash
• Squeeze the water out, never wring, then roll in a towel and press
• Lay flat to dry. Superwash wool stretches while it is wet, so never hang it
• Never tumble dry

The first wash

A little dye may rinse out the first time, especially in deep reds and heavily saturated colors. That is normal and it settles after a wash or two. Wash a new piece separately the first time and skip the fabric softener, which coats the fiber and dulls hand-dyed color.

Hand wash only

DK Lux Cashmere is not superwash. Hand wash it cool and lay it flat.

Sock Lux Cashmere and Sock Lux Silk will survive a gentle machine cycle, but hand washing keeps them looking better for longer. Cashmere blooms and softens after the first wash and will pill where it rubs. Silk and yak get their sheen from the fiber itself, and hot water or agitation dulls it.

Sparkle bases

The Stellina in Sock Sparkle and DK Sparkle is a non-metal fiber, so there is no scratch and the glint will not wash out. Keep it away from high heat, which is the one thing that dulls it. No hot water, no dryer, no hot iron.

Blocking and storage

Block with cool water and pins or wires rather than steam. Superwash grows when wet and settles as it dries, so block to your finished measurements and let it dry fully before moving it.

Store finished pieces folded rather than hanging, somewhere cool, dry and out of direct sun. Hand-dyed color fades in a sunny window.
